| Spring and Summer warm weather has begun in Ohio. It is very important to protect yourselves and others from Heat Related Illness and Stress. Heat related deaths and illness are preventable. From 1979 to 2003 excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. |

| Extreme heat is when the temperature hovers 10 degrees or more above the average high temperature for the region and last for several weeks. Licking County average high temperatures range from 85 to 90 degrees F. |

| |
| -Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of you activity level. If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot. |
| |
| -Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar – they cause you to loose body fluids. Avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps. |
| |
| -Stay indoors if at all possible. Take cool showers. If you do not have air conditioning, visit the shopping mall or library. |
| |
| -Check regularly on: Infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, people who have mental illness, and those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease and high blood pressure. |

- Limit your outdoor activity
- Cut down on exercise
- Rest often
- Wear layered, protective clothing and sunglasses

| Hot dry skin (no sweating), hallucinations, chills, throbbing headache, high body temperature, confusion/dizziness, and slurred speech. |

| Heavy sweating, extreme weakness or fatigue, dizziness, confusion, nausea, clammy/moist skin, pale, muscle cramps, slightly elevated body temperature, fast and shallow breathing. |
| |
| pain with spasms usually in the abdomen, arms, or legs. |
| |
| Call 911 when these symptoms are observed and have the person sit down in a cool place until help arrives. |
| |
| Cooling Centers in Licking County: Listen to the local media for when and where cooling centers will be opened for citizens. |
