Personal History
 
  • Doug Smith and his family have lived on the same land in Harrison Township for most of their lives. Doug married Helen (Kimes) in 1970 and they parented two sons, Eric and Todd, each graduates of Watkins Memorial High School, and each now married with children. Helen died of cancer on November 29, 2004.


  • Doug is a proud US Air Force veteran, serving both stateside and overseas during the Vietnam-era from 1964-'68. He attended the University of Cincinnati.


 
 
Professional Experience
 
  • Prior to becoming a Licking County Commissioner in 2005, he served for 26 years as a Harrison Township Trustee, 15 of those as President of the Board. His current term as County Commissioner runs through December 31, 2010.


  • Doug has been a licensed real estate broker and auctioneer for over 35 years. He and Helen formed Doug Smith Realty & Auction Co., in the early-1970s, specializing in the sale of estates, homes and land, and their sons continue in the family business as licensed Realtors and auctioneers.


  • In the early-1990s, Doug and Helen restored the historic Outville Hay & Grain Co., an old mill in the bucolic Licking County hamlet of Outville, where their business office is now located.


  • In 2006, Doug concluded an unprecedented term of 15 years as a governor-appointed member of the Ohio Auctioneers' Commission, a five-member panel that serves as liaison between his profession and the Ohio Department of Agriculture. At several times during his five terms on that panel, he served as its Chairman.


 
 
Community Involvement and Memberships
 
  • Doug's service to his country, his State and his community includes active membership on the board and as vice-president of the Ohio National Road Association, several professional organizations, the Solid Waste District Board, the Licking County Planning Commission, past president of both the Pataskala Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce, membership in the Greater Licking County and Pataskala Area Chambers of Commerce, a charter member of the Greater Licking County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, member of the Licking County and West Licking Historical Societies, member of Mensa, member of the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills, member of the Licking County Trustees and Clerks Association, member of the Licking County Republican central committee, and many others.


  • A noted historian and writer, Doug regularly contributes to newspapers and magazines across the region, and is a co-author of the 1,200-page local history book, "Preservation 2000". He co-authored "A Traveler's Guide to the Historic National Road in Ohio in 2005," a widely distributed and acclaimed book now in its fourth printing, which was nominated for a 2006 "Preserve America Presidential Award." Doug has over 700 published works to his credit. He is an acknowledged authority on the history of the National Road in Ohio and is much in demand as a speaker around Ohio, and is a popular tour guide along the National Road (U.S. Route 40) corridor.
