Soundex and Double Metaphone Search
Soundexes and Metaphones are used for fuzzy searches based on the way a name might sound. A soundex is a four character representation based on the way a name sounds rather than the way it is spelled. Theoretically, using this system, you should be able to index a name so that it can be found no matter how it was spelled. Metaphones are a way to code English words phonetically by reducing them to 16 consonant sounds. This reduces matching problems from wrong spelling or different spelling of names. The Double Metaphone algorithm was designed to make up for some of the discrepancies in the original metaphone algorithm. More information on soundex can be found here. More information on the double metaphone can be found here.
