LICKING COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSIONCOMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS
Community Development is dedicated to "developing viable communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and expanding economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income." This goal is national in scope, as well as existing at the state and local level. Generally funded and supported by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and a few other federal and state agencies, the Planning Commission provides technical assistance to the County, cities and villages in the use of funds to keep local communities vital as well as providing administrative services to the County.
With this goal in mind, the State of Ohio's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program makes funds available for communities, neighborhoods and organizations to make improvements in streets, sidewalks, water lines, and other infrastructure and to carry out activities to directly benefit low and moderate income citizens, such as housing rehabilitation, supportive services, or housing subsidies. In addition, funds may be used to help eliminate slum and blighting conditions through, for example, the demolition of vacant, dilapidated buildings and/or the rehabilitation of downtown business buildings.
