Transfer History
While records have been legally transferred out of the county overtime to the Ohio Historical Society or other county-level historical associations by various county departments, most records transferred were originally located in the courthouse attic.

During the summer of 1972, the Licking County Records Commission initiated a program wherein all of the county’s inactive records were inventoried department by department. All records were appraised and either retained or disposed of according to state law.

Forty tons of records were inventoried between June 1972 and January 1973 dating from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Only a few records dated before 1875 were found as the result of courthouse fires in 1875 and 1879. Some records of historic value located in the courthouse attic were transferred to the Ohio Historical Society (OHS) and the Licking County Genealogical Society (LCGS).

Between 1979 and 1983, the county pursued another inventory of records specifically located in the courthouse attic. OHS and LCGS received some records deemed to have historical value in an effort to preserve them while county officials organized and cleaned up the attic to store active records.

Early probate court records were transferred to LCGS in between 1992-1996 to better serve genealogists who accessed those records on a routine basis.

The lists above include records transferred out of the county since 1973 and have been compiled to assists researchers pursuing historical, genealogical, and other research endeavors. Also, the lists were created to assist county department in responding to public records requests.
