Hiring Process for a Sworn (Deputy) position:
Once your application is received, you will be sent an acknowledgement. Your application will then be reviewed for minimum qualifications. The minimum qualifications to be considered for a sworn position with this agency are as follows:
Please note: The Licking County Sheriff's Office staffs all five divisions within the agency with sworn Deputy Sheriff's. We do not currently employ nor accept applications for Corrections Officers.
If the applicant meets all of the basic minimum qualifications listed above, his or her application will be put on file for a period of one year. The agency conducts testing for sworn Deputy Sheriff positions on an infrequent basis. Once a test date has been determined, candidates who have applications on file and meet the basic minimum requirements will be invited to attend testing. The notification or invitation will be sent out at least 30 days in advance of the actual test date.
The first phase in the Deputy Sheriff candidate testing process is comprised of both a physical agility test and written exam. Applicants invited to test will be first asked to successfully complete a physical agility test. The test is comprised of a 1.5 mile run within a certain time frame based solely on an applicant's age, as well as the requirement to complete a set number of sit-ups and push-ups within a one-minute time frame, the number again determined by the age of the applicant.
Pre-Employment Physical Fitness Standards for Deputy Sheriff Positions:
Those applicants who successfully complete the physical agility test will then be asked to take a written exam. The exam, created and scored by an independent entity, is administered in three phases that test an applicant's general knowledge and cognitive abilities.
Individuals who successfully pass both the physical agility and written tests will then be asked to sit for a panel interview. The panel will be comprised of three staff members from the agency representing multiple functions within the organization. Candidates receiving a score of 70% or higher on the panel interview are then forwarded to the next stage in the hiring process.
Applicants that successfully pass the panel interview stage in this process are then subjected to a comprehensive and extensive background investigation. The investigation includes an examination into a candidate's criminal, driving and financial history, as well as interviewing past and current employers, references, and social acquaintances. This stage in the process is, by nature, inherently lengthy. While the first three phases of the hiring process may be administered within a two-month period, it may take several more months for the background investigation to be completed.
Those individuals who successfully pass all of the testing and interview stages and successfully pass a background investigation will then be eligible for a final interview with the Sheriff or his designee. After a final interview has been completed, the Sheriff or his designee will then make the determination of whether to extend a conditional employment offer to the candidate. There are four components to the conditional offer for a sworn position that must be met:
Once an individual has successfully completed these conditions, the candidate is then eligible for hire or appointment as either a full-time or reserve Deputy Sheriff. There is no ranking method utilized by the agency in this process. It is essentially pass/fail. Applicants seeking a full-time appointment may be sworn in as an active reserve or auxiliary unit until selected by the Sheriff to fill a full-time position.
Hiring Process for a Civilian position:
Once your application is received, you will be sent an acknowledgement. Your application will then be reviewed for minimum qualifications. Those minimum qualifications for a civilian position with this agency are as follows:
If the applicant meets all of the basic minimum qualifications listed above, his or her application will be put on file for a period of one year. When a non-sworn or civilian position becomes available within the agency, applications on file for that particular classification will be reviewed by the applicable Division Commander and Community Services Division personnel. The persons conducting the review will then generate a non-ranked list of potential candidates who will be invited to interview with a panel of three staff members from the particular division the position originates, as well as representatives from the Community Services Division.
Candidates must receive a minimum score of 70% on the panel interview to be given further consideration in the hiring process. Those individuals that score a 70% or higher will again be reviewed by the applicable Division Commander and representatives from the Community Services Division in an attempt to generate a list of qualified candidates eligible for the next stage in the process.
Those candidates selected by this review panel will then be subjected to an extensive and comprehensive background investigation. The investigation includes an examination into a candidate's criminal, driving and financial history, as well as interviewing past and current employers, references, and social acquaintances.
Those individuals who successfully pass the background investigation will then be eligible for a final interview with the Sheriff or his designee. After a final interview has been completed, the Sheriff or his designee will then make the determination of whether to extend a conditional employment offer to the candidate. There are two components to the conditional offer for a non-sworn or civilian position:
Once an individual has successfully completed these conditions, the candidate is then eligible for hire for the particular position within the agency.
The agency's Community Services Division handles all employee candidate testing and hiring process matters. Questions regarding this process should be directed to one of the following individuals within the Community Services Division:
