***New 2019 Residential Code of Ohio Effective July 1, 2019***
The Ohio Board of Building Standards recently announced that the new 2019 Residential Code of Ohio will go into effect on July 1, 2019. This means that any residential project whose application for approval is submitted to the Licking County Building Code Department on or after July 1st must comply with the new residential code. Projects whose application was submitted on or before June 30th will be under the 2013 Residential Code of Ohio (even if the permit is not issued, or the project is not started, until after July 1st). Our office will note on the approved plans those projects that must comply with the new 2019 Residential Code of Ohio.
Information relating to the new residential code can be found under 'Applications and Forms' of our webpage.
Electronic access to the new residential code can also be found by visiting either of the following websites:
***Building Code Enforcement within the Village of Buckeye Lake***
Our office is pleased to announce that we have entered into agreement with the Village of Buckeye Lake to provide non-residential code enforcement within the Village limits beginning on January 1, 2019. This service will be in addition to the residential code enforcement our office already provides to the Village.
For those projects already permitted through the Ohio Department of Industrial Compliance (DIC), the DIC approval will be recognized by this department. In other words, if you have approval from the DIC, you will continue to obtain your plan reviews and inspections through the DIC, and will not need to obtain a separate approval through our department. Once the project is complete and the DIC issues the Certificate of Occupancy, then all new work performed after the issuance of the Certificate must be permitted through our office.
Should you have any questions regarding the approval process through our office, please do not hesitate to contact us by calling 740-349-6671.
The Licking County Building Code Department is responsible for the enforcement of building codes for all residential and commercial projects throughout the majority of Licking County. We are located in the lower east wing of 675 Price Rd., Newark (old TB Sanitarium). Our office hours are 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Our office phone number is (740) 349-6671; our office fax number is (740) 349-6672.
If you are interested in performing a residential project, you may need a permit from our office. For a list of residential projects that do or do not require a permit, please see the "Summary of residential work that does or does not require approval" document under the Applications and Forms menu. If you are not sure if a permit is required, please contact our office.
Before applying for a permit from our office, you must first obtain a Zoning Certificate from your local Zoning Inspector. If your project is located in a township that does not have zoning enforcement, you must obtain approval from the Licking County Health Department. There are some jurisdictions that have additional notification requirements. Our office has information packets regarding those jurisdictions available in our office and on this website under the “Additional Forms” drop-down menu. For information regarding whom to contact for zoning approval, please click on the “Zoning Contact List” available under Building/Development tab located on the main page.
To submit for a building permit, please provide a completed Application, a copy of the Zoning Certificate (or Health Department Approval for areas without zoning) and construction plans and specifications for the project. If your project is residential, you must submit at least two complete sets of construction plans and specifications. If your project if commercial, you must submit at least three complete sets of construction plans and specifications.
For further explanation of the above, or additional information, please select the appropriate drop-down box located above. These attachments include an Application for Permit, Fee Schedule, various checklists and procedures for obtaining permits and plan approvals, and supplemental handouts that you may find useful.
