A Brief History:

The office of county auditor was created by a joint resolution of the Ohio General Assembly in 1820. The first individuals to hold the position were appointed, but the following year it was up to the county electorates to choose their auditors for a term of 1 year. The term to be served by the auditor was gradually increased to 4 years between the office’s first election and 1919. Since its creation in 1820, the county auditor has served as the chief fiscal officer of the county and has been empowered to perform a range of duties. In 1846 the county auditor became the “sealer of weights and measures for the unincorporated areas of the county.” During the 19th century the county auditor became responsible for compiling and reporting statistical information to the state auditor as well as issuing a range of licenses to county residents through 1935.

Auditor Function:

As the chief fiscal officers for Licking County, the auditor is responsible for maintaining the county’s financial records and issuing warrants for payment of county obligations. In conjunction with the fiscal responsibilities of the county auditor’s office, they are charged with evaluating and determining property values for taxing purposes as well as transferring real property deeds. The other duties of the auditor’s office include issuing dog and vendor licenses, certifying tax rates and administering various tax reduction programs.
